Editing AI-Generated Responses

Last updated: 2026-02-19·3 min read

Quick Summary

Premium plan subscribers can edit AI-generated responses before approving and publishing them. The inline editor lets you refine wording, adjust tone, or add specific details to make each response perfectly suited to your business voice.

Editing Is a Premium Feature

The ability to edit AI-generated responses is available exclusively on the Premium plan ($49.99/month per location). Basic plan users can approve or skip responses as-is but cannot modify the response text. If you find yourself frequently wanting to tweak responses, upgrading to Premium is recommended.

Note

If you are on the Basic plan and try to edit a response, you will see a prompt to upgrade to Premium. Your existing reviews and responses will be preserved when you upgrade.

Using the Inline Editor

  1. Navigate to the Reviews page and find the review with the response you want to edit.
  2. Click the "Edit" button on the AI-generated response card.
  3. The response text becomes editable in an inline text area directly on the review card.
  4. Make your changes to the response text. A live character count is displayed below the editor.
  5. Click "Save" to save your changes, or "Cancel" to discard them and revert to the original AI text.
  6. After saving, you can approve the edited response and publish it to Google as usual.

Character Count and Limits

The inline editor displays a real-time character count as you type. Google imposes a maximum response length of 4,096 characters for review replies. The character counter will turn red if you exceed this limit, and you will not be able to save until the response is within the allowed length.

Pro Tip

Aim for responses between 100 and 300 characters for most reviews. Concise, genuine responses tend to perform better than lengthy ones. For negative reviews, slightly longer responses that acknowledge specific concerns are appropriate.

Best Practices for Editing

While the AI does a good job of generating appropriate responses, here are some situations where editing can add value:

  • Add the reviewer's name if the AI did not include it and you want a more personal touch.
  • Reference a specific product, service, or team member that the customer mentioned.
  • Adjust the tone for your brand — some businesses prefer a more casual voice while others want formal professionalism.
  • For negative reviews, add specific resolution details such as a phone number or email where the customer can reach you.
  • Correct any factual inaccuracies that the AI may have introduced, such as incorrect business hours or service details.

Reverting to the Original Response

If you have saved an edited response but later decide you prefer the original AI-generated version, you can revert to it. Open the review, click "Edit," and then click "Restore Original" to replace your edited text with the AI's original draft. Note that this overwrites your edits, so make sure you no longer need your custom version before restoring.
